BY LINDA SAMUELSON, MUSIC INSTRUCTOR
As we enjoy another unseasonably warm week with cold weather knocking on our doorstep, music will be warming the halls of Northland Community & Technical College. On November 12, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. in the Northland College Theatre in Thief River Falls, vocal performers from the area will take the stage to entertain with a variety of music. The performing groups slated for the evening’s entertainment are the Northland High School Honor Choir, consisting of 105 top choral students from ten area high schools and the Northland Chamber Choir, both under the direction of Linda Samuelson with guest conductor, Vanessa Martell.
Each year since 1972, Northland hosts two music honor festivals, one for choir and one for band where students learn and perform. The music directors at their high school nominate the students. Students come together to see old friends and make new ones that share a passion for music as they rehearse together during the day at Northland and join the Northland Chamber Choir in the evening to perform for the community.
The concert will feature the following songs from the Northland Chamber Choir:
Early One Morning (Tom Scott)
Brush Strokes (Martin Williams)
The Duel (Field, Jordan)
Hopelessly Devoted to You (Mark Brymer)
Royals (Deke Sharon)
The Northland High School Honor Choir will perform these songs:
A Jubilant Gloria (Linda Spevacek)
The Seal Lullaby (Eric Whitacre)
White Winter Hymnal (Alan Billingsley)
Baba Yetu (Christopher Tin)
The Northland Chamber Choir has been rehearsing since August and has already had one performance this fall. It is a non-auditioned group that takes its membership from college students and community members. The Chamber Choir is offered every semester at Northland and rehearses three times during the week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from noon until 12:50 p.m.
Northland Music Chamber Choir Conductor Linda Samuelson has been the director of the Northland Community & Technical College ensembles since the fall of 1999. Ms. Samuelson has a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Lawrence University, 1991, a Master of Music in Saxophone Performance from Baylor University, 1995, and a certificate in Ethnomusicology from Bethel University, 2006. Northland Honor Choir Guest Conductor Vanessa Martell was a Northland music faculty, voice and guitar instructor and Chamber Choir conductor and was with the college from 1999 to 2014. Vanessa graduated from Lincoln HS; received a Vocal Performance degree from Northeastern Illinois University in 1998 and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of North Dakota in 2008.
