The NCTC Foundation now owns student housing! The purchase of the former Foxtail Complex was finalized on May 2, and crews were on-site May 3 to begin the renovation phase of the project. Understanding the impact this will have on the community, the NCTC Foundation saw an opportunity to give back by working with local non-profits to give to those in need.
As updates were made, Habitat for Humanity has been part of the process, picking up most of the existing appliances for re-purposing within local communities. The Salvation Army has also benefitted from donations from the former Foxtail Complex.
We knew we needed to find a good use for the appliances but the volume of appliances made it difficult for many donation centers to find adequate storage. Orb Management was able to reach out to Habitat for Humanity’s Bemidji office and they were able to take and store many of the appliances and find great use for them all across northwest Minnesota.
The majority of the appliances were stoves, refrigerators, microwaves, dishwashers, and some furniture. The major benefit of appliances like these was that many Habitat homeowners are typically unable to find affordable options when appliances fail but the condition of these items made them really appealing as low-cost options.
A volunteer group from Habitat and students from NCTC helped to remove many of the items and load them onto a semi that went to Bemidji, MN. The collaboration between the students and the volunteers really exhibited the commitment to community both groups have.
When Habitat came, some students were still living in the complex and that meant when they left there were still appliances that could be utilized within the community. The Salvation Army, Thief River Falls, was able to utilize many of the remaining appliances. With the units empty, renovation continues at a robust pace.
The complex consists of 5 buildings, 40 units, 144 beds, and renovation will include:
- New Windows
- Front Doors
- Counter tops
- Electrical and plumbing upgrades
- Interior painting and exterior siding
- Heat Pumps
- Appliances (stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, washer & dryer)
In addition, all units will be fully furnished with beds & mattresses, chests, desks, sofas, chairs, consoles and stools for kitchen counters. Students need only pack clothes, sheets, towels, personal items and their laptop!
The application process for leasing is now online. Student friendly, 10-month leases are offered, with short-term leases for summer available. Each student will lease a bedroom with the use of shared common space (living room, kitchen, laundry room, bathrooms) within the unit.
The Foundation Board of Directors are thankful to have the support of so many to ensure the success of the project.
